balEnce™ BioPesticide Fly Spray

balEnceTM BioPesticide Fly Spray & Bait Information PDF

balEnceTM is a solution of the spores (conidia) of Beauveria bassiana (Bb)---a naturally occurring, environmentally friendly fungus that is present in soils throughout the world. Beauveria bassiana occurs in numerous strains which target and are fatal to certain insects. The spore is picked up by the target insect, reproduces inside it, and kills the insect. Generally, and depending on the target insect and the ambient temperature, the Bb infected insect ceases reproduction and succumbs in three to five days. The Beauveria bassiana spores present in the environment are only sufficient to infect and kill a very small percentage of its target insect. By adding balEnceTM to the environment where the target insect is an issue, one is increasing the amount of this natural insect predator to a level that is sufficient to control them. Because balEnceTM is an insect specific pathogen, it has no impact on humans, animals or other insects.

  • Each 15 oz. container of balEnce™ treats up to a 50,000 square feet.

  • Each 15oz. bottle makes 25 gallons or 100 quarts of spray at the labeled mix rate.

  • Can be spray applied or dabed with a cloth onto Horses. See "Equine" tab above for details

  • Is a naturally occurring, environmentally friendly fungus (Beauveria bassiana) that specifically targets flies

  • Approved for use by the US Department of Agriculture’s National Organic Program for organic production

  • Has no harsh chemicals and is safe for humans, animals and beneficial insects

  • Is designed to be an integral part of your Integrated Pest Management (IPM) program

  • Is approved for sale by the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)

balEnce™ Biopesticide Fly Spray and Bait have been developed from the specific strain of Beauveria bassiana that is the host specific pathogen for the Muscidae family of flies. balEnce™ is approved as a biopesticide by the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the PMRA, Health Canada, for use killing Musca domestica – houseflies. balEnce™ Biopesticide is also approved by the USDA National Organic Program and is safe for humans, livestock, poultry, pets and beneficial insects.

balEnceTM BioPesticide Spray and the Muscidae Family of Flies

Beauveria bassiana is a naturally occurring fungus that is found worldwide. In fact, strains of Beauveria bassiana are typically found wherever there are insects – such as flies – in barns, stables, poultry houses, etc.

Beauveria bassiana exists as many different strains of the fungi. Each strain of the fungus is a host specific pathogen. That means that a particular strain of Beauveria bassiana can “recognize” a specific family of insects to the exclusion of all other biological entities such as other insects, animals or humans. When the strain of Beauveria bassiana recognizes its host, the fungus infects the host by penetrating the host’s cells and growing inside the host insect. In the process of growing, the fungus kills the insect.

One particular strain of Beauveria bassiana is a host specific pathogen that uniquely targets and kills flies in the Muscidae family. The Muscidae family of flies includes the common housefly as well as horn flies, fruit flies, face flies, stable flies, black garbage flies and blowflies, among others. This particular strain of Beauveria bassiana will infect and kill all the flies in this specific family of flies but will not harm other insects such as beneficial insects (parasitic wasps, hister beetles [Carcinops] and earwigs), animals (poultry, horses, swine, cattle), humans or the environment.

DIRECTIONS FOR USE

SHAKE WELL BEFORE EACH USE

It is a violation of Federal law to use this product in a manner inconsistent with its labeling.

Use Restrictions

  • Do not use a fungicide prior to application of this product.
  • Do not apply this product through any type of irrigation system.

Application Instructions

  • Each bottle contains approximately 15 fl. oz. of balEnce, which treats 30,000 to 50,000 square feet of floor area.
  • Apply balEnce at a rate of 1.5 to 2 fl. oz. per 5,000 square feet of floor area.
  • Although balEnce can be applied with conventional equipment of the user’s choice, there must not be any filter or screen smaller than 50 microns, which would prevent the active ingredient from passing.
  • Be sure to agitate the contents of the bottle by shaking vigorously to re-suspend any sediment that formed in the bottom.
  • Add the contents of the bottle to sufficient water in a mix tank to ensure even coverage over the treated area.
  • Add a small amount of water to the emptied bottle, replace the cap, and shake the bottle again. Add this “rinse” water to the mix tank.

Apply the spray to walls, floors, posts, and manure concentrating areas where the greatest numbers of pests are located. This is a contact infection material with greatest efficacy against adult flies. Re-treat at intervals of 2 to 7 days as long as pest pressure persists as pest eggs hatch and mature.

balEnceTM – The Adult Fly Specific BioPesticide

balEnceTM The Adult Fly Specific BioPesticide PDF

A New, All Natural, Organic BioPesticide

  • balEnceTM BioPesticide is a naturally occurring, environmentally friendly and host specific pathogenic fungus (Beauveria bassiana) that targets adult flies. It has no harsh chemicals and issafe for humans, animals and beneficial insects.
  • balEnceTM BioPesticide is designed to be an essential part of your Integrated Pest Management program and is approved for sale by the US EPA; the PMRA, Health Canada; and the US Department of Agriculture National Organic Program.
  • balEnceTM is economical — the usual concentration of balEnceTM BioPesticide spray for killing adult flies is a half bottle (7.5 ounces) of balEnceTM in four gallons of water to treat 25,000 square feet. A higher concentration is effective in killing fly larvae (maggots) before they develop into pupae. Regular usage of balEnceTM BioPesticide maintains control of your fly problems efficiently in terms of both time and cost.
  • balEnceTMBioPesticide spray is sprayed throughout the house or barn where the Beauveria bassiana spore is picked up by the fly, grows and reproduces inside the fly and kills it.
  • A pair of flies beginning reproduction in April may be progenitors, under optimal conditions and if all were to live, of 200,000,000,000,000,000,000 flies by August.
  • The fly you kill today prevents the future emergence of millions of flies. Flies die in 36 hours to five days depending on exposure and the environment.
  • balEnceTM residual stays on surfaces for more than 28 days.
  • As the flies die, beneficial insects take over their natural role of killing the fly population at the egg, larval and pupal stages.
  • Once control is gained, treat only as needed, the beneficial insects will do the rest ─ balEnceTM is very economical to use.
  • The manure is chemical free ─ in fact, many balEnceTM users sell their manure at premium prices because it is pesticide free.

This photomicrograph (below) depicts the Beauveria bassiana spores generating germ tubes that enable the fungus to grow inside the fly and kill it.

balEnce™ BioPesticide Fly Spray - Pest Control for Equine

balEnceTM BioPesticide Fly Spray - Pest Control for Equine PDF

balEnceTM BioPesticide Spray and Bait are organic, all natural, safe and effective biopesticides that specifically target flies. They will not harm humans, horses, pets, beneficial insects or the environment.

Controlling the flies around you and your horses is very important, not just because of the irritating bites, but because flies are also traveling vectors of disease. The housefly alone has been linked to the spread of more than 30 bacterial and protozoal diseases.

Stable flies resemble houseflies, but they travel greater distances, breed in decaying vegetation, and feed on the blood of warm-blooded animals.

TerregenaTMs balEnceTM BioPesticide Liquid Spray and balEnceTM BioPesticide Bait are approved for sale to the equine market by the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) National Organic Program.

Directions for balEnce™ BioPesticide Liquid Spray for Adult Flies and Fly Larvae balEnce™

After application, adult flies and fly larvae die in 24 to 72 hours.

The active ingredient in balEnce™, Beauveria bassiana, is a fungal spore that infects the adult fly and fly larvae on contact. The fungus consumes and ultimately kills the insect. Flies do not develop resistance to balEnce™ as with most chemical pesticides — so rotation of pesticides is not necessary or desirable.

balEnce™ BioPesticide Fly Spray - Pest Control for Dairy

balEnceTM BioPesticide Fly Spray - Pest Control for Dairy PDF

Dairies present a challenge for any fly management program because of the different environments found around the dairy farm and the availability of fly breeding areas.  House flies, stable flies, horn flies and face flies are all possible problems depending upon the dairy location, time of year and type of housing used.

Cows that are allowed access to pasture will encounter all of the fly species while those kept in free stall housing may only have house flies as pests.  Calf areas as well as maternity and sick pens all present unique challenges.  balEnce™ BioPesticide Spray and Bait have demonstrated excellent control of the flies and fly larvae that are problems in the diverse dairy environments.

The active ingredient in balEnce™ products is a naturally occurring fungus (Beauveria bassiana).  This fungus is a host specific pathogen that targets and kills flies but does not affect humans, animals, pets, beneficial insects or the environment.  balEnce™ Spray and Bait are approved for use by the dairy industry by the US Environmental Protection Agency and the US Department of Agriculture’s National Organic Program for organic production.

In order to provide our dairy customers with a complete solution to their fly control problems, Terregena© includes parasitic wasps as an important part of its product offering.

Non-Beneficial and Beneficial Insects Found in Poultry Manure Pits

Poultry manure pits are ideal breeding environments for a variety of insects— some beneficial as they are natural fly predators while others carry diseases and damage structures.

NON-BENEFICIAL INSECTS

Darkling and hide beetles are definitely not beneficial to poultry management. Darkling beetles can transmit many poultry diseases as well as harbor several parasites. Examples include leucosis (Marek’s),
Infectious Bursal Disease (Gumboro), coronavirus, Newcastle Disease Virus, avian influenza, Salmonella sp, E. coli, Aspergillus sp, Eimeria spp., round worms and tape worms. Darkling beetles serve as a very attractive food source to poultry. When exposed to beetles, chickens and turkeys prefer eating them rather than poultry feed. Consumption of beetles at any age can needlessly expose the animal to disease, alter intestinal microflora, and alter normal intestinal function. The damaging effects reduce productivity and ultimately financial returns. Darkling beetles consume feed and contaminate feed similar to the presence of mice, driving up the cost of production. In addition, large beetle populations found in manure diminishes available plant nutrients and generates nuisance complaints from rural residence near fields where it is applied. When applied to open fields, beetles seek the nearest sheltered environment and will become uninvited pests in rural homes. These pests damage property by burrowing into insulation.

Hide beetles normally breed and feed in the carcasses of dead animals. Damage to poultry houses and other nearby
structures occurs when hide beetle larvae burrow into wood and other structures.

BENEFICIAL INSECTS

Beneficial insects include parasitic wasps, hister beetles (Carcinops pumulio) and earwigs. Terregena© provides parasitic wasps and hister beetles as an important part of its product offering. These beneficial insects are an essential
part of an Integrated Pest Management (IPM) system that also includes the Terregena© line of balEnce™ BioPesticide products.

Female parasitic wasps deposit their eggs inside the fly pupae and, once hatched, the parasitic wasp larvae consume the pupating fly – killing the fly before it emerges. These wasps are approximately 2.5 mm (half the size of a gnat). Parasitic wasps may be added, especially after clean-out, at a rate of approximately 500,000 wasps per house per week for several weeks.

Hister beetles consume up to 40 fly eggs per day. They resemble darkling beetles but are smaller at approximately 1.5 mm (1/16 in.). Hister beetles fall prey to darkling beetles and hide beetles.

Earwigs are very aggressive and consume fly larvae. Earwigs cannot be bred in captivity.

Begin releasing parasitic wasps and hister beetles with the first warm weather. Use balEnce™ BioPesticide Spray for adult flies and fly larvae and balEnce™ bait for adult flies along with maintaining dry manure to minimize the fly
breeding habitat for effective and economical fly control. It is important to note that chemical pesticides kill beneficial insects while balEnce™ BioPesticide is not harmful.

balEnce™ BioPesticide Fly Spray - Pest Control for Swine

balEnce™ BioPesticide Fly Spray - Pest Control for Swine PDF

The basics of fly management for swine facilities are similar.

However, differences in the types of feeders, drinkers, manure storage, and manure moving equipment in the three distinct production phases (Production Facilities, Breeding Barns and Gestation Rooms, and Farrowing Rooms and Nurseries) require variations in the use of balEnce™ BioPesticide Spray and Bait.

In addition, several types of flies are commonly found in swine production facilities including:  house flies, fruit flies, sewer flies and blow flies.

Both the balEnce™ BioPesticide fly spray and bait have shown excellent results in controlling the flies and fly larvae commonly found in the swine environment.

It is important to begin application of balEnce™ BioPesticide Spray and Bait as soon as flies and/or larvae are observed ─ good early fly control is easier than attacking a fly population that has gotten out of control.

SHAKE WELL BEFORE EACH USE

Using Terregena© balEnceTM BioPesticide Spray and Bait in a Swine

Integrated Pest Management (IPM) Fly Control Program

Terregena© balEnce™ BioPesticide Spray for adult flies and fly larvae and Terregena© balEnce™ BioPesticide Bait for adult flies provide a safe and economic alternative to chemical pesticides for fly control and are approved for use in organic production systems. Both the balEnceTM BioPesticide fly spray and bait have shown excellent results in killing flies found in the swine environment. It is important to begin application of balEnce™ BioPesticide Spray and Bait as soon as flies and/or larvae are observed ─ good early fly control is easier than attacking a fly population that has gotten out of control.

The basics of fly management for all swine facilities are similar. However, differences in the types of feeders, drinkers, manure storage, and manure moving equipment in the three distinct production phases (Production Facilities, Breeding Barns and Gestation Rooms, and Farrowing Rooms and Nurseries) require variations in the use of Terregena© balEnce™ BioPesticide Spray and Bait in an IPM fly control program.

Production Facilities

The types of flies most commonly found in production facilities include house flies, fruit flies, sewer flies and blow flies.

  • House Flies ─ breed in manure or anydecomposing organic matter. They have a 70 to 40 day life cycle.
  • Fruit Flies ─ breed in spilled feed thatbecomes wet. They prefer dark areas andwill rest on ceilings, crates, and farrowingdata cards. Fruit flies have a five to sevenday lifecycle and reproduce very quickly.
  • Sewer Flies ─ breed in liquid manure. They are poor fliers and are normally observed around the end of the swine houses wheremanure exits and a residue is left from poorflushing or poor pit recharging.
  • Blow flies – breed in animal carcasses. They only exist when swine carcasses arenot disposed of in a timely fashion.

As soon as adult flies are observed, production facilities should be treated with balEnce™ BioPesticide Spray. Mix a half bottle (7.5 ounces) of balEnceTM in four gallons of water to treat 25,000 square feet. Apply this concentration in a heavy mist with a backpack sprayer twice per week during the fly breeding season.

Suspend two balEnce™ BioPesticide Bait trays per 1000 square feet. Trays are a more effective manner of distributing balEnceTM BioPesticide Bait than bait stations due to the openness of these facilities and the variability in construction and penning designs.

Where larvae/maggots are observed, mix three ounces of balEnce™ Biopesticide Spray in four gallons of water for up to 1000 square feet and spray in a steady stream directed at the maggots two times a week.

Breeding Barns and Gestation Rooms

Due to the rapid turnover and cleaning of gestation rooms after each cycle as well as the accumulation of dust on all surfaces after sows are placed in the gestation rooms, the use of balEnce™ BioPesticide Spray should be supplemented with additional fly control methods such as balEnce™ BioPesticide Bait. One balEnce™ BioPesticide Bait Station should be hung (distributed equally) 12 to 18 inches from the ceiling per 100 square feet.

Farrowing Rooms and Nurseries

Farrowing rooms are used by lactating sows and piglets for a 14 to 21 day rotation. Following weaning of the piglets, rooms are cleaned and returned to use. As in Gestation Rooms (above), the rapid turnover and cleaning of all farrowing rooms after each cycle and the accumulation of dust make the addition of balEnce™ BioPesticide Bait to the regular spraying of the rooms with balEnce™ BioPesticide Spray necessary to control the fly population.

Manure pits require proper preparation and should not have floating fecal material or visible feed piles in the pit, as it will provide breeding material for both house flies and fruit flies. One balEnce™ BioPesticide Bait Station for every five to eight farrowing crates in the farrowing room should be suspended 12 to 18 inches from ceiling. balEnce™ BioPesticide Bait should be replaced or refreshed twice a week. Hang balEnce™ BioPesticide Bait Stations so they can be taken down when the room is cleaned and then re-hung for the next farrowing group. balEnce™ BioPesticide Spray should be used twice a week starting at week one and applied in a heavy mist with a backpack
sprayer. If fruit flies are the main problem, it may take two or three application cycles to reduce the breeding population since these flies have a five to seven day life cycle.

In areas where larvae/maggots are observed, mix three ounces of balEnce™ Biopesticide Spray in four gallons of water and spray up to 1000 square feet two times a week. The spray should be in a steady stream and directed at areas where maggots are observed, which will normally be along the edge of the farrowing rooms or under feeding and water stations. If larvae are observed in the entire room, then the entire surface should be treated. Treatment should continue until larvae and adult flies are under control.

Nurseries should be treated with balEnce™ BioPesticide Spray after cleaning and prior to the placement of the piglets. Application should be continued twice per week during the fly breeding season. balEnce™ BioPesticide Bait Stations should also be used. Eight to 12 balEnce™ BioPesticide Bait Stations should be suspended 12 to 18 inches from ceiling for a standard size nursery room. Where larvae/maggots are observed in the nursery areas, use balEnce™ Biopesticide Spray as described above in Farrowing.
